How Hard Is It?

Inspired by the recent downgrading of top-end routes at the Red River Gorge, Canadian climber Mike Doyle has written an interesting piece examining the somewhat subjective nature of climbing grades. In the article Doyle explores the idea that a route can feel significantly harder or easier depending on whether it suits the climber’s strengths and weaknesses or even height. As an interesting side note, Doyle’s route Lucifer 5.14c at the Red River Gorge has not been down graded.
