Study Finds Sub-Standard Sport Route Lower-Off Anchors

A recent analysis of sport route lower-off hardware shows that much of the fixed gear rates significantly below basic climbing safety standards. The tests were run over the last 14 months by Emanuele Pellizzari at the Italian Mountaineering Club Gear and Techniques laboratory at Taggì di Sopra. Pellizzari found that climbers were often using sub-standard gear and in one case the carabiners tested could only be sold in Europe if they had been marked “not for climbing”.
