New Salathe Solo Record by Lempe

Lempe has completed four one-day solos on El Capitan, his most recent being a speed record

Lempe breaks 21-year-old record

Cheyne Lempe, 22, is a member of the Yosemite Search and Rescue’s exclusive eight-person team. For extra cash he has been known to carry haul-bags off El Cap for those too tired to carry them. In his short, yet impressive career, he has bagged some big first ascents and speed records, some highlights:

  • North Pillar Sit Start, 1,900 m, 5.11, A0, Cerro Fitz Roy linkup ‐ First Ascent
  • Monos Al Cielo, 500 m, 5.11, Aguja Giullaumet ‐ First Ascent
  • The Nose, 5.9, C2, Grade VI, El Capitan ‐ Youngest person to solo in a day, 19 hours 21 minutes
  • Zodiac, 5.8, C3, Grade VI, El Capitan ‐ Youngest person to solo in a day, 19 hours 7 minutes

He recently did the second one-day rope-solo ascent of Salathe Wall, 5.9, C2, 35-pitches, in 20 hours and 6 minutes, setting a new record.
