Talks with Park officials have been ongoing and although the future outlook is optamistic, the current status of Halfway Dump remains as closed to bouldering.

Cheers.

Hi,

Does anyone know if there has been any progress in regards to the access issues at Halfway Dump?  I know over the past few years people have been saying that negotiations are under way, but I have yet to hear of any headway.

Any information is appreciated!

Thanks.

Although initially the Park was delaying proceedings with budgetary restrictions, I think the problem of late has been from the climbers side. With the greatest of respect to the Access Committee, there has been a number of changes in the volunteers who have been dealing with the issue and the new people involved have to be allowed time to become familiar with the issue. They are enthusiastic and a solution is possible so the patience and cooperation of climbers will surely be appreciated. If anyone is thinking they can do better then I suggest they join the Access Committee volunteers and help out.

If anything, this areas climbing issue should serve as a reminder that it is better to act responsibly and keep access rather than screw it up and have to work hard to re-gain access.

IMHO I think that TV Tower has better bouldering. If I lived in Ontario I’d be there all summer…

Hey Adam, so you’re still banging away at this eh. Kudo’s to you for all the time and effort.

Folks, having been involved in this issue during it’s early stages, I can attest to the hours, work, frustration, and effort that goes into trying to save or reopen access when someone crosses the line and gets it closed. You may think a park warden didn’t see you or might not think you’re having a noticable impact but don’t be the selfish idiot who screws over your climbing buddies.

From the outside it might seem like theres no progress but what you’re asking is for volunteers to donate their own time, gas money, or whatever else to go fight YOUR cause for you. To go into a meeting with land managers/owners and ask for your access. Give a little thought when climbers access reps suggest guidelines. It kinda kills their credibility when they are saying climbers will follow the rules when idiots keep getting seen doing what they shouldn’t. Don’t try to circumvent the rules, the intention of the rules matter as much as the exact wording. If you want quick results, be prepared to pay a professional a full time salary otherwise give the volunteers some support. I’m not talking about just Halfway here but access at pretty much every climbing area.

Adam - When it comes to Halfway, it sounds like BPNP has changed their process from what they originally wanted. I know I don’t have to convince you that I understand how frustrating it can be. Keep with it though and I hope success comes soon. I might not be in that area anymore but I still long to see all our past efforts pay off, a good sort of closure if you see what I mean. You’ll end up with climbers gratitude, just a pity they rarely show it in beer ;-) Grant

Hi there,

My name is Adam and I am the Halfway Dump Portfolio Manager and a Board member with the Ontartio Access Coalition.

The OAC met with Bruce Pen National Park (BPNP) this winter and began completing the formal process for Activity Assessment required by Parks Canada.  This involves examining all of the opportunities and issues associated with permitting activities within the Park.  The meeting went very well and the OAC was asked to provide the Park with some additional information (you may recall the OAC Climbing Survey? Thank you to those who took the time to complete it!).  This information has been provided to the Park and the Park is currently engaging  a few last stakeholders who need to contribute to completing the Activity Assessment process.  Once the Activity Assessment Process is complete a reccomendation will be made by the BPNP to Parks Canada.

I strongly encourage everyone to respect the current closure of bouldering at Halfway Log Dump and the overall rules and environment at Bruce Peninsula National Park.  The Ontario Access Coalition has done a lot work to get to this point and our ongoing repsect of this and other closures influences our abilities to negotiate with both BPNP and with other land managers for areas that we are trying to negotiate access to (The community of Land Managers is smaller then the community of climbers!).

I also encourage everyone to join the OAC as a member!  Just like the petition for Niagara Glen, the more the more members we have the more we can can represent you as a climber! You can find out how by visiting http://ontarioaccesscoalition.com/.

Have a great summer!

Adam Reeve
