Post New CRAG by Kamloops!!!?!
on: March 1, 2007, 12:15

YO - been gone a while, thought I would throw in posting about something that’s been buggin’ me for a while.

Why is the development of crags around Kamloops a little lame?

I’ve heard and seen about ALL KINDS of potential around there!

Within a 2-hour drive of The ‘Loops, I’ve seen a SKAHA-sized crag with potential for HUNDREDS of sport routes, and also seen pictures of a GRANITE bouldering area with TONS of squamish-style blocs.

So what gives?

Are the ‘Loops locals keepin’ the good under the hood?

Or they spending their weekends cutting the grass, or sittin’ around with their thumbs up their… noses.

Whattayathing?

Peace out!!!

Must be talkin about the really great high quality climbing in Kelowna at the Boulderfields. Kelowna is 2 hours from Kamloops.

Hey Valade… That 2 pitch business you are talkinb about better be trad climbing or else.

Is the bouldering hedley that you are talking about?  Where is this skaha sized crag.  I live in vernon about an hour and a bit away from kamloops and have not seen this place you speak of.  The biggest chunk of rock I have seen out your way is marble canyon which does have room for many more routes… if you like limestone.  Marble seems to be a way under developed place considering its size and sunny exposure.  Where is this 2 pitch granite dome you speak of?

Hedley from Kamloops in 2 hours? You must be smokin’ crack…. He probably means The Nic.

I’d bet the granite dome is in the direction of Dunn Peak. Or the Coquihalla tollbooth…

Porcupine Canyon has lots of nice steep limestone but no routes.. probably not much under 5.11 though.

Dudes, those are all good suggestions, but pretty off base!  Mostly they’re in the wrong direction which is maybe why these crags arent developed.

First off - the bouldering.  The pix I’ve seen are from around Ruth Lake - big white granite erratics - and lots of them.  Ruth Lake is northwest of Kamloops.  But should be less than two hours.

But the crag - what a surprise to see a crag of that size without bolts.  I almost don’t want to tell you because I want to put up routes there and hog the place.  But that’s not what I’m about.

Head north towards Blue River.  Stop at the parking lot by the Mad River bridge.  Hike up into the canyone.  First little crag after a hundred meters or so.  Pretty small.  But then keep walking.  The place is huge - tall steep walls, super featured, some kindof funky orange rock looks like twisted quartzite or something.  Needs a little cleaning maybe but room for hundreds of FULL-length routes (I’m not kidding).  The holds look big for hard routes, but should be lots right up to 12-.

Check it out.  THe mad river is the bomb.  If I swing by this summer and there ain’t routes, I’m gonna start bolting there myself and call it the ROCKFISH GORGE.

Although really, the MAD RIVER GORGE is a better name.  So unless you want to ruin the place with a bad name, get busy.

And free camping at both areas too.  On crown land.

So grab some gear and get ready to fall - I can hear the mad river gorge call.

Can you hear the thundering drillz - bust out the rope and hone your skillz.

Peace out.

ya that granite dome is mostly trad climbing and it’s out in Barnhartvale. There is a good sized crag near oregon jack too, but with few routes.
