Post IMPORTANT NOTICE!! ROCKWOOD CLIMBING CLOSURE
on: June 29, 2007, 13:46

I am posting this message on behalf of the Ontario Access Coalition.

Climbers have recently been asked by park employees to discontinue climbing and leave the area.  Access to the area has never been formally addressed until now.

Please see the release at http://www.ontarioaccesscoalition.com/.

Until the issue has been resolved, we ask the climbers respect this current closure.

Thanks

Adam

Yep, left that god-forsaken province years ago and haven’t looked back once. You can golf, hike, canoe, masturbate, until your heart’s content, but DON’T WALK OFF THE PATH…

To get slightly back on topic, one of the large problems I see with effecting a closure at Rockwood is enforcing it. Granted, it’s a small number of climbers who use the area- but covert access and a history of keeping Rockwood info on the DL would seem to make it hard to self-police- and since the Access Committee seems to be in negotiation with conservation officials regarding future access, anyone who ignores the closure, and is caught, is likely to have a huge impact on future re-opening.

Any thoughts on how to enforce a closure at an area that hadn’t really officially ‘existed’ until it got shut down, and so has no official protocol for managing climbers as a user group?

For the record, I’m out until it’s re-opened legally.

Don’t worry Vram, I am happy to have you back in Ontario.  Besides, you can help us write a new guidebook.

Access issues affect us all regardless if they are happening across the country.  Just because Skaha might be a better crag than most that doesn’t make it a bigger issue (granted it probably affects more people).

Communities often look to others to see how they resolve issues so closures anywhere set a bad precedent.

Vram, given the number of people from out here you’ve pissed off on this forum, I can just imagine how welcome you’ll be back home. You starry eyed easterners coming out here because you think it’s open country should wake the f up. The two biggest access challenges in canada right now are right here in the west, Skaha and Ghost River.

what makes one access issue ‘bigger’ than another?

To someone from Guelph, the Rockwood closure could appear bigger than the threat to Skaha, no?

Don’t worry, I aint starry eyed no more. And I pissed some people off. Oh well… it’s the unreality show on the internet, a gong show and a half, irrelevant to anything that matters in any context whatsoever.
