Don’t get me wrong. B.C. is the most beautiful place I’ve ever visited or lived. I consider myself lucky to have been here and climbed here and worked here.

Now I’ll return this regularly hijacked program to the OP.

Any updates on whether the Rockwood situation has improved?

Talks and meetings are ongoing.  There is a group meeting with GRCA (Grand River Conservation Authority) shortly.  Updates will be posted immediately (ok, ALMOST immediately) on http://www.ontarioaccesscoalition.com on the front page and in the news section.  We will also post something on this forum.

Rockwood still remains closed to rock climbing.
The OAC is actively engaged in negotiations with the GRCA and we remain positive that the current access issues can be resolved.  Climbers’ cooperation in respecting this closure will significantly increase our chances of negotiating a favorable outcome.  For more details please see the Ontario Access Coalition website at:

Hi OAC guys,

I have a quick question about the Rockwood closure, but I want to start by saying that it sounds like you guys got together with parks staff at Rockwood quickly over the winter, and it sounds like stuff has moved ahead successfully to this point- so, thanks very much for the hard work so far.

Word on the street is that the last issue to be cleared up with Rockwood is a land-use (or land ownership) issue at the top of the Light side. I’m wondering if this is the case, but more generally, if this is not the case, I’m wondering if you could clear up what you guys are still working on with respect to re-opening the cliff. I suppose my knowing doesn’t help you get it open any faster, but we’ve been hearing rumours of an eventual reopening all winter, and this is likely my last season in Ontario for a long time, if not forever- so I definitely have a bit of a selfish interest in knowing if Rockwood will be climbable this summer.

Thanks a lot,

Alex

Hi Alex,

That is the current hurdle that we are trying to clear (see the last post on our website: http://www.ontarioaccesscoalition.com/ ).  Unfortunately this whole process is taking a lot longer than anticipated on both sides but we are still moving forward.  Continued climber co-operation in respecting the closure will increase our chances of successfully negotiating the re-opening Rockwood as soon as possible.

Thanks for your interest and concern….we’re doing our best to try to get Rockwood open before you leave Ontario!

FYI…Rockwood still under temporary climbing ban as per Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA).
This means NO CLIMBING!!!!  There are rumours of certain individuals visiting the area.  If you are caught climbing at Rockwood, I GUARANTEE that they will close the area for good.  We, the OAC and others, have been working very hard to ensure that an agreement is reached with the GRCA and that climbing at the cliffs can continue.  In the very near future, the GRCA is going to have an environmental assessment of the area completed and if they get there to find gear hanging on the walls (OR EVEN WORSE, FIND PEOPLE CLIMBING), then it will make any type of agreement pretty difficult.  Please, respect this closure.

Thanks

Is there a local politician we should be writing to?  Between this and the Glenn it is getting a little ridiculous.

Perhaps we need to be making these politicians realize that the climbing community votes and should have access to the land much like all other types of recreational activities.

In light of the recent access issues at the Glen, I thought this post deserved a bump. I have now left the country and I don’t expect to be returning to Ontario for another three years- but I do expect to return, and I do feel very, very strongly about Ontario climbing (some of it is just as good as the climbing anywhere else I’ve been, and it’s a real shame to see it closed)- so I still feel I have a vested interest in keeping these areas open.

Anyway, I’m just bumping this up so we can have some more discussion about any new developments wrt Rockwood.

Just wondering if there is any progress or rumors of progress towards Rockwood being open for the 2009 season? Or can we look forward to it still being closed indefinitely?
