I think it’s a pretty well known fact that Mr. Trotter has made a career out of climbing routes other people first discovered/cleaned/bolted. You may not completely agree with everything wall crawler states, but in this case, he does have a point.
In the grand scheme, even Sarq could easily argue that Sonnie is not the most visionary first ascentionist currently climbing.

That’s not to say Sonnie is not physically talented, just perhaps not the most inspired.

Wall Crawler - a comparison to RedShirt is not valid.

Red Shirt is an ESTABLISHED route.

The Path was NOT. Sonnie is (ready for this?) the FIRST ASCENTIONIST.

You have, through all of your posts, been making allusions that Sonnie removed bolts from an existing route - he did not. He did the FIRST ASCENT the style he felt was most appropriate for the rock that was there. The route was emphaticlally not already in place as you state. The rock has been there for longer than any of us - Sonnie merely found the path up the wall that others could not.

Your statement of I do not need a explanation from him at all. My views are what they are. sounds so much like George Bush it’s frightenning. What a myopic, close-minded approach to life. I feel bad for you.

The difference Sarq is that Mr. Sharma did not chop the bolts on those routes so he could make some neo-trad headpointing statement.

Is this boltchopping and headpointing going to be the “toxic legacy” (these are your words) of Mr Trotter?

Dear Mr Sarq

If headpointing is simply rehearsed soloing as you state, Mr Trotter could have left the bolts in place, rehearsed the route and then soloed it. Instead he chose to inspect the route, explore the gear and moves on rappel and only when the protection was deemed adequate and success relatively assured, proceeded to headpoint the line. In the UK we call this headpointing.

As for the boltchopping trend, it has to start somewhere.
As with many controversial actions, the antagonist/protagonist in these affairs often gains confidence from previous actions. If this is such a pure line as you and others propose than there would be no discussion. Unfortunately this is not Cobra Crack and it appears many are not impressed with the chopping of the bolts and the creation of a neo-trad headpoint route.

I was hoping to buy a different point for you on ebay, but was outbid. You’ll have to settle for this.

I agree that he had his justified reasons for doing what he did. It was one 5.14 route, not more. If you email him he’ll explain to you exactly why he did that.

Jason,

I still want that shirt and i’m thinking of buying one for my dear friend Mr Sarq.
I’ll take a medium.

I think Sarq wears an XL.

Um, yeah. Here’s one of the best climbers on the planet, and you’re arguing he never would have looked at the wildly impressive unclimbed wall above Wicked Gravity if it hadn’t had a couple of old bolts on it. Sure. OK.

Maybe if he was as baked as you are.

Hey Sarq,

Don’t you remember what happened?

Your rotund physique blocked out the sun casting the area in darkness – could not see a thing. We climbed by headlamp and luckily the shiny bolts illuminated our path!
