I heard a chopper come to the Bluffs yesterday (Sat) around 4:30.  I later heard that it evacuated a female climber fell seconding that 5.9 traversy pitch that ends the Smoke Bluff Connection.  She was apparently not life-threateningly injured.  Anybody have more accurate info?

she was fine - a bit scraped up but walked out on her own. Judging by her scream I was expecting much worse.

For being so low in the grade you really need a competent second on that pitch! I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often but with poor protection on the leaders behalf, the second could really go flying. I was not there but I thought it was at pixies corner area?

The Helicopter was not part of the rescue but was available should they need it as they were doing HETS training.

I was on High Plains Drifter and watched it as well. BTW holly crap is that an awesome climb!! That last pitch is stellar.

It didn’t happen on Pixie’s Corner - it was on the last pitch of the Connection. The biggest gear that the leader had was one #3 Camalot so he didn’t have much to protect the second on the handrail traverse. That’s where she came off and did a pendulum into the bushes.

I don’t think the leader realized that he could have prevented the ‘accident’ from happening. Hopefully someone let him know……

not quite.  i spoke with the leader and the second.  it had nothing to do with his gear on the traverse.  she was passed any possible gear placements on the traverse when she fell.

he placed gear in the final crack leading to the top of the climb.  when she came off, at the end of the traverse, she pendulumed because of the rope placement.  had he not placed gear in that final, short and easy crack, the rope would have gone in a direct line to the anchor.  the pendulum would have been avoided.

moral of the story is don’t place gear in that final crack.

respect is staying on topic.  do you have anything to add to a discussion about gear placement on wonderland?  that is the topic here.
