Just wondering if there are any climbers out there that have undergone surgery for their Hallux Abducto Valgus (bunions)?

How long were you off your feet?
How long ’till you could climb again?
Any other negatives (reduced toe mobility? inability to toe into pockets?)

I’m contemplating surgery but would like to hear your stories!

It’s been about a month since I’ve been able to go climbing (can’t even put on climbing shoe), and about two years that I’ve been avoiding the inside edge of my right foot.

Any recommends for podiatrists that understand the needs of climbers would be greatly appreciated too (I’m in Toronto)

Thanks!!!

you’ll likely get as many different opinions as you get people responding..

the only person i know who’s had the surgery, wishes she hadn’t.  She was off her feet for weeks, had about 8 months doing physio, will never regain full range of motion in her toe, and it still hurts after she goes running.

another friend was refused by the doctor, he was told that untill it affects your ability to function normally in everyday life, it’s a bad idea, because you might come out worse than you went in.

i gather that there are many alternative ways to lessen the impact of bunions…

rock scaling = yes.

A wooden peg-leg could be customized with a brightly coloured parrot. Pirates are still hot right now.

Thanks for the honest feedback!

I’ve heard about homeopathy & inducing immune response to try to get ‘natural’ inflammation which supposedly will increase circulation to the area and cushion it and reduce pain - - however the idea of weekly injections to increase the inflammation (when my foot already is mangled) doesn’t sound particularly appealing!

I’ve also heard that cortizone injections and pain killers can be used to just mask the pain….

Anyone else have other ideas?
