Post The Glen or Gatineau?

Which place is better to boulder at, moderate grades?
Is both places too muddy and mosquito-ridden in May or June, should I wait till October?
Is there any camping areas near either place?
thanks guys

Partridge,

If you have the option to choose between May/ June and October for either area - you should definately wait til Roctober for sure.  No bugs, fall colours and good temps.

Gatineau is not much of a destination - fun, but not much more than a day of worthy climbing.  Camping is easier here though.

The Glen is a destination area (from a regional perspective) 100’s of problems vs. dozens in the Gats.  True there is no easy camping nearby, but it can be done.  If you’re coming down with a crew, you could throw down on a motel room in Niagara for pretty cheap, have showers and live it up, all only minutes away.

If you’re coming from the East, you could hit up the Gatineaus for a day en route to the Glen, where you could spend more of your time.

If you’re going May/ June - Gats. will be hell with bugs.  The Glen will still have some bugs, but much less heinous.  Also you can often catch a breeze at areas down by the water which will keep the bugs at bay.

Where are you travelling from?  Have you considered Val David?  Good stuff there and nice in October.  MAy/ June the bugs will be nasty.

Anyway, hope that helps.

Well, maybe things have changed since I moved away a few years ago, but Gatineau has very little in the way of bouldering, whereas, (though I’ve never made it down there) Niagara has it in abundance.
I don’t think bugs will be too bad in Niagara then; but blackflies would be a problem in Gatineau.
As far as camping goes, I doubt you’ll find any around the Glen, whereas in Gatineau you will, formal or (discretely) informal.

But, why limit yourself? What about the Bruce Peninsula? Camp at Cypress Lake, boulder on the shore, DWS at the Big Kahuna - that’s what I’d suggest.

i was in val David this fall.  Its about 1 hr north of Montreal.  Very nice boulders in a beautiful forest.  Your suppose to pay to enter the park, they have guide books there for sale.  It has loads of real rock climbing too.  many 1 pitch cracks on these little forested hills.  I’m from BC so its funny to see that they call them mountains Back East.

The Glen will be great in May, and bugs aren’t much of an issue ever. There is an online guide as well: http://www.glenbouldering.com
