Post Vancouver Co-op bouldering gym

Does anyone know of the existence of a co-op bouldering venue in Vancouver?  I have been interested for several years in finding (or developing) an alternative, bouldering-only gym in the Vancouver area, where I can train late with like-minded climbers.

Certainly other cities in Canada and the US have them, and it seems like Vancouver would be a great place to start one, especially as a cheap storefront space in East Van goes for about 0 a month, and presumably storage space would be even less.  A 500 sq.ft space would be good, as long as it had 12 ft ceilings.

So, I have a couple of questions.  (1) Is anyone else as interested in this as I am?  (2) Does anyone know of a suitable space (small warehouse space, back of a garage, cheap storefront, etc.)? (3) What would be a reasonable yearly co-op fee?  My feeling is that 0 would be about right, but that’s really just a stab at a number.

Just curious…

I am curious about how other co-op gyms developed, and how they are run.  I know there are several co-op bouldering gyms across Canada, I’d love to hear about them.  How were the start-up funds divided amongst members, what are the annual ‘fees’, how many people boulder at any time, how many members are there, how formalised are these gyms (from a group of friends to a full-on co-op), and maybe most importantly, how BIG are they?

It’s easy to imagine starting a small bouldering gym (maybe 20 x 20 feet), but a bigger space is more expensive (I think a 15 x 40 feet space would be ample, but annual rents run - a square foot, even in warehouse space, in Vancouver, anyway - and a gym like this would (a) have to be central, and (b) near a skytrain - luckily, there’s lots of warehouse space in East Van / Boundary areas).

Who is interested in a project like this?  I’m curious… although I know this BB doesn’t have the readership it used to, so I’m not expecting this to be an thorough survey.

Q: What’s the difference between a bouldering coop and a Davie St. bath house?

A: There is no difference.

Trent I can’t believe none of your buds has a woodie. All you need is a garage or extra room and make a 45 wall, you don’t even need high ceilings. Then build it and they will come.

I’d love to know more about how the Bat Cave works, and how big it is.  It looks pretty extensive - how big is the space?  Is it in a warehouse?

Places the the UBC Bouldering wall are decent (I set there) - but still pretty expensive for what you get.  The drop in fee is , and the wall is 9 feet high, and about 20 feet long.  Certainly much smaller than the Bat Cave looks.

When we lived in Prince George, we ran a quasi- co-op wall in our basement (about as big as the UBC Wall).  Because of the design of the wall, and the types of holds, it was a far superior training wall to that of UBC, and like the Bat Cave, it was ‘free’ to people on the list.

You know I’m in. Unfortunately I’m not so good at getting stuff done, but count on me as a founding member.
