I read today that the Mushroom boulder in Hueco Tanks was closed by the park authority.

This makes me sad. John Serman described the Center El Murray on this boulder as The classic boulder problem on the classic boulder in the classic bouldering area of North America.

Goodbye El Sherman Dyno. Goodbye Stuck in Baltimore. Goodbye My 15 Minutes.

I’m glad I got to know you before your demise.

Wow, that really sucks! The first time I ever climbed outside was in Heuco well before the closures. I could barely climb V2 back then (I guess not much has changed!) and I remember sitting around the Mushroom boulder watching and getting inspired by those lines. I’ve never made it back to Heuco but always wanted to get back and test my mettle on the classics I couldn’t even imagine doing at the beginning.
Well, if you sit around wishing for opportunties to do things, changes like this will happen.
Sigh…I’m shedding a tear.

I have learned that the reasons cited were that there was erosion, which had in turn exposed previously undiscovered artifacts.

It is now desginated as a heritage/archeological site.

I heard from some people who just got back from the Tanks that they found some more artifacts near the mushroom boulder.  Not sure if these rumors are true, but if they are that would most certainly be the reason for the closure.

They should just dump a truck load of sand to replace whatever was eroded.

They took photos two years ago of the area under the mushroom roof. In two years the measured the erosion of dirt at the base at approximately 10-15cms. They did some test digs, found artifacts and have closed mushroof boulder. They have also taken photos of martini roof, the warm-up boulder and many other areas with roofs or high foot traffic. They will review these areas in the future and possibly close them as well.

A rumour I heard was that Sherman offered to help pay for an elevated platform at the base of the mushroom boulder but the park refused this option.

Climbing is not a sport. It is a lifestyle.
