Post SAS Update: Murrin Parking Closed

Hi Everyone,

Because of a fuel spill from a highway accident, the parking at Murrin will be closed from now until March 9th 2008 for remediation work.  For more information, see the following link:
http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/murrin.html#visitoralert

We will work at getting more information.  As the parking lot is the only effective spot to park, access to the park will be problematic if not non-existent. We will work on getting a small corner opened for climber parking.

Hi,

I am not sure about the identity of the parties or other details, but it was a highway accident involving a tanker.  This resulted in the spill of fuel, the effects of which the Ministry of Environment is trying to mitigate.  I believe the park link suggests the overall damage will be limited if they can get at the soil before it reaches the lake.  Driving by today, they seem to be pretty intent on this with amount of soil being removed.

My post on behalf of the SAS was mainly to bring attention to the access related issues regarding the incident.  If there is any further related information, we’ll post it on our website squamishaccess.ca and put the link on this forum.

Cheers, and hopefully they can mitigate the environmental impacts,
Tyrone Brett,
SAS

Hi:

Yes, it is a pain.  I spoke unofficially with a highway contractor employee/climber and he said one can park along the highway without risk of towing.  For instance, in front of Nightmare Rock, there is a good shoulder.  Some spots along the highway can most likely be used by those who really want to access the Park’s climbs.  Might be best to wait until the end of the clean-up though.

On a related note, some of us met with BC Parks to talk about the unwelcome state of the Chief parking lot and the fact that the Apron lot is for all intents and purposes non-existent due to highway fill.  We are hopeful there are remedies in the works and are working closely with the Ministry of Environment to this end. If the Easter weekend has good weather, it could be a gong-show at the Apron lot unless something is done.

As for comments such as I doubt there are many climbers going there now in February, so whats the need for parking for climber? if people went there right now I they would be climbing anyways. Climbing groups seem to bitch alot fort no good reason. I’d suggest a good dose of pet wall in winter and sorry for wasting your time.

I would have liked to have climbed there last Sunday. I know a bunch of people who did. The parking is a pain.
