If you had to pick 10 cities in B.C. to live in, which cities would you pick with the best climbing?  I think the top few are obvious(i.e. squamish, penticton, powell river etc.)but some of the others not so obvious.  Curious what everyone would pick.  I might be moving and am doing some research as to what some good options would be. Looking forward to reading some responses.
Cheers

I would have to say the obvious - Squamish. It has the largest selection of established climbing and is central to Powell river, Horne Lake and Whistler. Not to mention endless alpine routes.

Even though it is the obvious, and it may not have it all, it sure packs a punch into a small area. (not to mention the still UNDEVELOPED west side of the Squamish River……)

Lesser know areas are still awesome and I can’t wait to explore! As for the the other nine I’ll let everyone else fill me in.

Thanks guys for the responses, Rosswood and kitimat I had not thought of these.  I have heard some good stuff about terrace.  I am intersted in more info.  Is their any online pics or topos for some off the climbing in this area(I have seen some for terrace but not Rosswood)  Also is their cragging as in after work type stuff?  I think Castlegar is a good choice as well as their is exellant nearby cragging and alpine climbing with in close proximity.  Keep the posts comeing.

If you can can handel the locals, Castlegar’s ok. Pluss housing’s cheep.  I’d sell you my home if it wasn’t for all the crap that I know is wrong with it.  Powell River would be my second choice, housing there is comparible with Castlegar.  The olny problem I see with Squamish is the cost of living.  Unless you know someone who would rent you out his inlaw sweet for cheap, you’re screwed.  Wait a minute…

1)Vancouver suburbs. You live a little further from Squamish but closer to great climbing in the Valley so it’s a good tradeoff.
2)Squamish for obvious reasons. But I prefer Vancity to Squamish because of the greater diversity of climbing available as mentioned above.
3)Okanagan - Vernon maybe? Kelowna is a giant stripmall and penticton is full of old folks. Vernon has great climbing and is a nicer place to live.
4) Castlegar. the blue collar town in the west kootenays, friendliest and most affordable in my experience. Plus there is a wealth of undeveloped rock up along the lake.
5) Bella Coola. Best and most accessible undeveloped rock and lots of developed stuff.
6) Smithers. In the NW this is the nicest town to live in.
7) Hope. If you want to live in the Vally rather than Vancity Hope is the place to be with the most bouldering and alpine and a rapidly developing cragging scene.
8 )Golden/Revelstoke. Tradeoff as to which has more climbing, go with whichever has cheaper property at the moment. Golden is closer to the Bugs and Rockies, the Stoke closer to the good part of the Selkirks, Valhallas and Gold Range.
9)Fernie. all the advantages and none of the disadvantages of Alberta mountain towns.
10) Campbell River. If you have to live on the Island this has good cragging and is closer to the alpine. You’ll pay for it by rarely leaving the island and paying more for gear.

Places I would rather NOT live despite proximity to some good climbing include Kamloops, Kelowna, Whistler, PG, Terrace, Victoria and Powell River

Hey

I dont blame any one for not mentioning Prince George but climbing here isnt forsaken. Check out this website…

http://www.climbpg.com

Good information on great local crags. I recommend if anyone passes through to check out Upper Fraser or the Grafiti Wall in Frt. st. James lots of good sports climbs.

Cheers.

NICE site about PG. Lived there when I was two, and I was pretty talented at that age, heck I could climb out of any crib!

Speaking of PG, is Mr. PG still there? What would it be a V4 high ball to get on top the ol’bastard?

I worked up there for 5 summers planting (Nass, terrace etc).  The one thing NOBODY has mentioned is…the bugs.  You are going to have to take DEET baths before cragging after April in a few of those places!

Bella Coola supposedly has Squamish-sized granite walls.  Bring your rifle; bears are very friendly there.

Haha… You bet! Mr PG is still standing after all these years although rumor has that its no longer made of wood i think its steel now so it would make for an interesting boulder problem ha! If youre into bouldering theres some good bouldering around guiscome bluffs i think is on the website.
