The complete group to Vail is being finalized, but it will consist of a mix between members of this team and last year’s team.

Chris,

I have a brief question for you.  Why aren’t you taking this year’s team to Vail?  Why are you using a quasi-arbitrary mix of this year’s and last year’s teams?  Unless you are taking ALL of this years team, and still have spots left over…

Good luck in Vail!

Trent,

Here’s a not-so-brief explanation:

When it was found out that Vail would host a World Cup this year, we needed to determine who would be able to represent Canada. We had a team picked from last year’s nationals and several of those climbers had never had the opportunity to attend a World Cup because of the high costs to travel to Europe. We wanted them to have this opportunity to represent Canada at least once.

Also, a determining factor was the closeness in time between out scheduled national championships and the Vail World Cup. To organize a team just made of this year’s climbers within three weeks was not considered feasible at the time we were deciding this. With international registration and licensing to consider plus the development and production of an official uniform, there was a lot of work to be done and that timeframe gave us a small window to work with.

Now, in hindsight, I can say that maybe it would have been possible to just use this year’s team - perhaps. This is my first time organizing the Open team so a learning curve has been used that will help me for next year.

In the end, I think everyone from this year’s team that wanted to go to Vail ended up being able to attend. Added to last year’s team, we are sending about 22 athletes.

Hope that helps!

Chris,

That is a perfectly reasonable answer.  Thanks for the information!
