Post Tony Cousins - Memorial Service - August 11th

As many may have heard, Tony Cousins died on July 28th, 2008 while climbing at Squamish. He was 70, and was rope-soloing Sally Five Fingers at the Neat & Cool cliff in the Little Smoke Bluffs when he died.

There will be a memorial service for him this coming Monday, August 11th, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Knox United Church in Vancouver. (5600 Balaclava Street, at 41st).

Tony was one of the pioneers of climbing at Squamish. He and Jim Baldwin did the first ascent of Slab Alley in 1961, the first route on the Apron. He also did some routes that are now well-known as free climbs, including Brunser Overhang, Perspective, Caboose, and routes on the Papoose. Tony’s climbing career spanned five decades.

There was a short obituary in the Vancouver Sun on August 7th, at http://www.legacy.com/can-vancouver/Obituaries.asp?Page=Notice&PersonID=115068276

There is a longer article and stories about Tony in this week’s Squamish Chief, at http://www.squamishchief.com/madison/WQuestion.nsf/SCnews/C379A7816D5F0A318825749E007D21B9?OpenDocument

Great to put a face to a name.

Being the first party to climb up the Apron must have been something else. Then to pass while climbing (non accidental),  being a life long Squamish climber and all, is an honourable way to go.

Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn.”
