Post Silent Menace/Smell The Glove

Yesterday Ben Harnden A.K.A. Butters made the first ascent of Silent Menace since the starting hold broke off, renaming it Smell The Glove. The new version clocks in around .14b. Also of note is Butters height. At five foot three, he single handedly takes away the excuse of not being tall enough to climb hard.

Nice Ben! Is it still a jump start? Can you really re-name a route if a hold breaks though… I don’t know…although I like the Spinal Tap reference.

I agree, I wouldn’t think that one broken hold means you can rename a route, if that’s the case than everything in Cheakamus would have been renamed 20 times over!  Doing that is a bit of disrespect to the first ascensionist, who put in the time and energy to open the route up for everyone.

As far as the new name is concerned. It’s a locals joke rather than a stab at anyone. No need to take it seriously at all. Since the subject has been broached, I would personally add that the first ascentionist did no more than Ben. He climbed a pre-bolted, pre-cleaned, but unclimbed line. That’s my take anyway.

Except for some stupid reach problems, shorties outclimb the tall across both sexes and the whole range of ages.

Dave Graham? micro
Tommy Caldwell? easy to trip over
Beth Rodden? barely tips 5 feet
Adam Ondra? kid probably can’t get on half the rides at the CNE
Lynn Hill? her head is tits-high to the average human

Even Steve McClure is under 5′ 8 it seems.

I agree with J-Rock about the fact that Ben’s ascent is not that much different than the first with respect to the amount of work that went in to the FA.  All of the hard work was done by the person who cleaned and bolted the line.  While climbing the thing is no doubt a hard and impressive feat - there is a lot of hard work that goes into establishing these lines by route builders whos work is often overshadowed by the glory of the FA.  So a big shout out to route buiders everywhere who put in all the time and effort to make these lines climbable to begin with.  Also props to Butters for sending the ‘new/ harder version’ of the line after the hold broke.

One minor correction however J to the Smith.  While Ben’s short stature and subsequent ascent of the line mos def takes away excuses from the ‘I’m too short’ to climb hard whiners - I believe it was little Lynn Hill - way back in the day - that was the Original Gansta who ’single handedly’ proved shorties can climb hard!  Shut up and Climb ya’ll!
Peace.

Sup Sup ya’ll.  Butters, you da shizzle! Pound for pound the strongest blond man to come out of K-town.  Crushing it yo.  I love to see that.

I’m so glad it was you who bagged that little bitch, and for the record that glued flake was nothing more than an eye sore and an easy heel hook, I think it’s so much better (butter) the way it is, now that there’s no cheating allowed it looks more aesthetic, suitors have to stomp that like a real man.

As far as work, I recall it took a day or two to figure out, I still can’t believe it was more than seven years ago that I did that thing.  Anyway, I moved some bolts around and replaced the old ones with new ones to make it more attractive.  As far as the name is concerned, who gives a flying f*ck.  Call it whatever you want, you won’t be hurting my feelings.  Good work Ben.  Now do Dream Catcher next and call it…

‘Lick the Shoe’.

Peace.
