My letter and forethoughts are sent. It would be a tragedy to lose The Glen.

The Niagara Glen has been a popular climbing and bouldering area with climbers in Eastern Canada and the US for over 30 years. A new Land Management Plan is now proposing a complete bouldering ban in the park. The plan is still in draft form and climbers have until Oct 19, 2008 to comment on the proposed changes. The Ontario Access Committee is urging all climbers to contact the appropriate park officials and express their opposition to the bouldering ban. More details including a draft letter and email contact information here.

What can I say? Ontario is beautiful and the climbing is great. But Ontario sucks.

They’ve pimped out Niagara Falls, a jewel of nature’s creation, like a four dollar Saigon backrub. Nothing is sacred up there. But, oh gosh, a few people scrambling over rocks is a RAPE OF MOTHER EARTH. We must ban these mattress people from the forests, and allow her beauty to flourish again. Possibly under the control of a gaming commission with slot machines nearby.

Have they used ultra-violet light to detect for invisible native carvings yet? Climbers probably destroyed those too.

And don’t forget all the cedars we destroy. I once did some factor 2 fall tests off one at Rattlesnake point, just to stick it to Gaia.

Yes, indeed write a letter of dissent. A terse letter. And if that fails, as it likely will, there’s always a place called west. It lies beyond the frontiers of the centre of the Universe. Use google map to locate it.

Just wrote the Niagara Parks Commission a sincere letter objecting to the proposal.

As usual climbers are a large enough group to not go unnoticed but too small to be taken seriously.

If a fee is the answer — fine. If better trail management and education is the answer — fine. But if the Parks Commission kicks us out because they lump us in with drunken idiots spray painting ‘KIMRAN’ on boulders and smashing beer bottles on the trail then I don’t know what to say.

We lost Half Way Dump and if we lose the Glen it’ll be sketchy buildering on the UofT campus or nuthin’

(Besides I’m feeling good these days but I don’t think I can send the Gunt and the Phoenix in less than a month.)

I suspect that if the Glen was ‘out west’ - then MEC would likely be all over it…

I guess the only answer is Vram’s - let’s all move west to the unaffordable squalor of Van city and the wet coast and get really good at lip traversing boulders in Squampton.  Hooray!

Every climber in Canada (and State-side for that matter) needs to write a letter to oppose this unilateral action to close the Glen…

Does anyone know if the MEC is going to get involved?  They would certainly have a lot of influence in a decision like this.  I feel they have an obligation to say something, as they have certainly profited from the sale of chalk, shoes, mats, clothing, etc. that were purchased exclusively to use at the Glen.

Canmore, Calgary and Kamloops don’t exactly come to mind as bouldering venues…

Canmore has great alpine and ice and 4 months of reasonable rock scaling.  Calgary is hell on earth -although apparently it does have some good plastic pulling.  The Loops has some OK cragging i guess.  Saskatoon sounds appealing…

What we’re talking about is the most climbed at bouldering venue in proximity to the ‘centre of the universe’.  (not to be confused with the most climbed at bouldering venue in proximity to the ‘centre of the climbing universe’).

I remained tacitly ambiguous about my suggestion of west. There’s always Canmore, or Calgary, or Kamloops. And failing that there’s always Saskatoon. I hear their rules on climbing are fairly liberal.

Hey Trent.  Completely agree with on your suggestion to get the Mec involved.  I’ve been over here now in Ontario for a little over a year and the climbing ethos is quite different from that of back West.  There are tons of restrictions here, and it’s really quite surprising (to me) how many good crags and bouldering areas have been closed down due to access and environment issues.  All climbers should write letter to the Niagara Parks Commission.

I hear you’re back on the Coast again. That’s great!  Give my best to Shelley.

Vram - you forgot Kuh-lowna and Kuh-ranbrook. Presentational Image

Anyway, my diss was not directed towards western climbing areas - they are all plenty good and I likes them lots.

The frustration is directed towards MEC and its western-centric outlook.  I am sure that if this were happening to an area out west, they would be jumping all over it a la Skaha.  Just calling them out on it.  Hopefully they step up to the plate…
