Its probably a local land owner looking to make some extra $.  I had that happen with a neighbour of mine some time back.

I think the same folks who put up a big stink about climbers causing ecological damage need to open up their eyes to things such as this instead of focusing on such a small user group that is not the main cause of the issues at such areas.

Never mind, I think we better just ban climbing at TV Tower as well, just to be sure that no more negative impacts are created by our cliff scaling.

Climbers cause mass erosion issues you know, but cutting down trees is not a problem.  Hmmmmmmm.

TV Tower is privately owned. If the owner wants to log it so be it. Be happy we are allowed to climb there. There are far bigger issues in this world than some trees getting cut down.

haven’t been up there since summer, but sounds like the price of lumber is up and/ or the next batch of trees has matured for cutting.  Any logging done in such proximity to the escarpment has to be done within guidelines set out by the NEC.  Trouble is, outside of an initial consultation visit, there is no real follow up and consequently, the locals get a bit ‘cowboy’ on the place, as was the case a couple of years ago near my place up on the Bruce.  It does look pretty devastating after the initial cull, but it does grow in after a couple of seasons.
It does definately seem hypocritical to rail on climbers and a bit of moss removal when compared to full on logging in the same area.  I’m thinking that all the climber ‘impact’ would equate to the removal of a couple of trees.  If it is anything like the typical logging
operation up there, you will see hundreds of trees pulled out of there in the next bit.  It’s likely too that this is only the beginning, as most of the operations take place thru the winter months.
The owner is certainly within his rights to harvest what’s his, and we are priveleged to be able to climb there - it’s just a bullshit double standard when you compare the overall impact of the two activities.

Hey Alex - was down in your neck of the woods last week and climbed Hard Times on Moss Cliff - fantastic route and a truely awesome crag replete with an adventurous (read strong current and cold) river crossing.

As for those lots - while they were affordable at one point - they were never 10k, otherwise I would have bought a few.  Try 150-180k for one acre on the water and 30-40k for an acre in the bush!  There’s still a few deals to be had up on the Bruce, but not there.  The owner is a long time local who doesnt need to sell and knows he’ll get his price eventually.

Does anybody know what is going on at T.V. Tower? I was there the past two weekends and on the most recent one, I came across a big ass tree cutting machine, a pile of giant logs, and a large clear area just off the rough access road. It would appear that somebody has done some significant damage over the course of a week.

Mayhaps it is finally being developed, which would make buying one of those 10,000 dollar plots a really good idea.

Hey Martin,

I haven’t been to Moss Cliff yet, but I hear it’s fantastic. That and the Spider’s Web are on my list for whenever it’s warm enough to climb outside again (next spring?).

I had no idea the lots at TV Tower were so expensive- I was up there last year with Andy and others and I thought Andy’d followed up and came up with a price of 10,000 dollars for a really small lot. It seemed like it was too good to be true but it kind of made sense that they’d be selling those lots for cheap since the access road really wasn’t/isn’t much of a road, and there is no infrastructure- but I’m not surprised to hear that we may have had the wrong price.

Hey Alex,

The season at Moss is likely done, but the Web is climbable relatively late into the season as it catches good sun.  The lots are pricey cause they will need to build the infrastructure into them - they will be pushing a road thru as an extension from the exisiting cottage road down below.

For the record to anyone interested.

The local folks up on the Bruce generally don’t have any issues with climbers.  Those folks that harvested those logs were just doing their thing.  In turn, they likely wouldn’t bat an eye at us climbers doing our thing.  The major problem lies with a few small self interest groups with preservationist ideologies that associate with and influence the local public land managers at the BP National park and MNR.
Unfortunately it is all too easy for them to simply ignore climbers and not take any
progressive action towards establishing our rights as a legitimate user group.

Ah well, that’s progress I guess. I almost wish the Bruce could be made into a gigantic provincial park. It’s not as though Southern Ontario hasn’t already suffered enough human infringement.

As for TV Tower, I wasn’t going to say anything, but I bouldered there last summer for a few days. Scrubbed some new lines, put up maybe 10-15 problems. Some stuff there is better than the soon to be eco-Nazi Glen, and some stuff is even as good as Squamish. Primo bouldering spot I think.

But then what do I care. I’m back on the wet coast. So heads up Ontario. TV Tower is the next big thing. Until it gets bulldozed I guess.
