Can anyone help out with some beta on these areas?   Supposedly better than Portrero if you like steep sport climbing but you need a car.  I’d be driving from Hueco.

I was there last winter for 6 weeks. Culo de Gato is not the nicest place. There’s not that much to do unless you want to project a couple of 5.13 routes. There’s a good 12b there called Los Cuervos and a good 13a too called Virasana. Other than that, you probably won’t bother returning to it.

El Salto is another story. The guidebook says it’s 2 hours south of the Potrero but it’s easily 4.  You will certainly need a car. The final 1 hour goes up a VERY steep and twisty road that is a little dangerous. It’s way up in the mountains with few supplies or facilities but there is a small store in the little village nearby where you can get basics and water. Otherwise the camping is in a cobbly canyon. Not too comfortable for a tent. You walk about ten minutes to Las Animas Wall, which is unbelievable. Some people camp right at the base of the wall. Mexicans use this area regularly for motorbike and quad adventures so it can be very loud on weekends and redneck-like.

Another 20 minutes down canyon is Tecalote Cave which has about as much climbing as the main cave at Horne Lake, and just as good. Definately worth a visit, but not as comfortable to stay for long periods as the Potrero, and not as warm either. Great for a side trip when you want a change from the Potrero.

When I was in El Potrero Chico 4 years ago I heard a lot about El Salto and Culo de Gato.

You can maybe talk to Magic Ed (if he is still there) at the coffee shop up by Homeros.  He’d have the beta I’m sure.

I saw some pictures and it looked pretty cool.  Potrero is the shit though!
