Post What’s with???

In the news section, Gripped posts lame topics about Everest being bolted yet they say nothing about Canada’s young new rock star big Willy Stanhope and his grand ascent of the east face of the Monkey in Smith Rocks!

First climbed free while placing all the gear on lead by Sonnie T at 5.13d (R), young William nabbed the second ascent in the same fashion, placing all gear on lead and skipping the bolts. Good job Will, keep on rockin!

Come on Gripped folks!

Now that is news worthy. Great to see yet another hard Canadian climber, skipping bolts and sending ridiculously hard routes in good style.

Will is definitely on fire. Having said that I sometimes wonder, what is trotters next big mission?…

For me, I’m such a wuss. I clip anything and everything! Sometimes placing pieces between bolts! If it is there I clip it, but having said that you can assume I don’t exactly fit into the sending ridiculously hard routes in good style category. hahah

Kurt,

The First Free Ascent of the East Face of Monkey Face was done by Alan Watts in 1985. Your post can be misconstrued by readers leading then to believe that Sonnie got the FA when he simply repeated the route in better style. A small but important distinction.

Good work Will!

According to his blog, Sonnie T’s next big project involves learning how to pole dance.

Sark– I was recently in a peeler bar for a stag, with a bunch of mostly Manmorian climbers no less.  And the main topic of discussion was not the usual did you check out her _____________? but rather holy sh*t, could YOU do that maneuver?  Aside from their flexibility, these women had some serious athletic chops, not to mention functional abs to make any rock climber jealous.

I remember the days when climbers didn’t need excuses like it was a stag to go to peeler bars. And pitchers at the Cecil.
