John Bachar died today in Mammoth, California, apparently after a fall while solo climbing. There is much more about this on the SuperTopo website, for example at:

John was a great climber and a great man.

This is very sad news John was soooo cool.

Very sad to hear. He was… the wild man next to Yabo?

I am enormously saddened to hear of the death of John Bachar.  He was not simply an inspiration to many climbers, but a climber who defined climbing itself.  Whether it was crack climbing, bouldering, or especially free-soloing, his accomplishments are legendary.  Thanks John - neither you nor your accomplishments will be forgotten.

Once again, John sets the example, and leads the way for all thinking climbers. He was far from a ‘wild man’, but rather a philosopher of movement and explorer of the pure athletes’ mentality. He was not a personality, didn’t make a great chum, and could often come across as a bit of a hardball asshole, but he was an uncompromising artist and a relentless educator by example. He was a pocket prophet, and your average climber had no idea what he was about. Doesn’t matter, because Bachar’s acts defined modern climbing for all of us, whether we were paying attention or not.

Sorry dude what I knew of him, he was a wild man (in a very kind way). He would solo things that others would not even dream of and a bit tipsy some of those times he was. I did not say anything to be snubed at or to be insulted nor was what I said an insult to John. It is who he was among many other views.
