Post The Polar Circus
on: October 25, 2009, 19:06

I just found a couple of the old climbing mags. Does anybody have any idea what happen to one very cool mag called The Polar Circus?

It was one of the best mags going.  Excellent stories with quality photo’s. It covered all of Canada with stories from some of the best climbers of the time.

I know some of the publishers passed on ( well both have) but why nobody kept it going is so odd. I have volume 1,2, and I believe three just have to find it. Very high quality mag and very well written.

Peace.

I think you have seen all of the issues.  It was about 20 years ago that they did it and it had a very limited appeal, about climbing in the rockies.  Yes it was nicely put together though.  It only lasted three issues.

Limited appeal about the rockies? Are you saying it did not cover the rockies or only the rockies.

I think the volume I have has everything from the West Coast Club Wadd to Ice climbing back east and southern Ontario to DOA in Squamish and the back of the lake.

I also was told, somebody (not me) had placed these both on Ebay for Seventy Five USD and got the sale. A Hundred and fifty bucks for two mags. Must have had some appeal.

Peace.

Actually, I think that was a beautiful publication. Anyone can guess why a publication might or might not succeed.- many worthy ones fail because they are too ambitious for the small market they appeal to. Probably, in the case of Polar Circus, it was just a matter of it not really being a magazine at all, but a sort of de-alpine-clubbed Alpine Journal, which made it expensive, hard to keep on real newsstands and a little weird for the average climber.

I think the point may have been missed.

In Polar Circus we have a story called a Cold Six Pack and I believe they covered the exact same climbs as the last issue of Gripped. Hummmm better story line in the Polar however.

Why can we not have a good solid mag in Canada about Canada with quality writing and stories from around the globe. In the last issue why do we have a photo of the Chief in the rain? I hear every couple of years it does not rain 24/7 and the Chief looks great and DRY. Must be a rumor.

Nothing against Gripped at all. I just think it is time to turn up the volume.

Oh and to the dude who complained about using paper does he have a clue about his computer? Trees grow back. I guess he just wanted his name in the mag so he could go out and buy several issues to give to family and friends.

Peace
