I put all my climbing gear in my shed for the winter and went to check on it recently and found a white mold had grown over most of it, including my trad gear and crash pads.

Am I screwed? Do I have to throw all this stuff out?

Obviously climbing on gear that had mold living on it would sketch anybody out. But the crash pads. Surely some of you guys in Squamish have had to deal with this before?

Tips?

get rid of webbing and sling with mold, but keep the crash pad, but wash it and try it properly.

Hey Vram,

Check with somebody. If the white mould was only a film then wash it. I believe BUT CHECK that white mould has no effect to nylon and that is the issue not what it may look like. That white mould is on everything that has been out in the open in the dark in BC. So anybody who has placed gear on the garadge wall to look cool has the same issue just may not know it as we almost never see it untill you can.

AGAIN check the information call manufactures of products of nylon. I am sure unless it is thick with moisture and it is growing like a plant it should be OK.

But why have nylon in a place where mould can grow? Tub it all man tub it all. Cheap 24bucks gets you a perfect dry location anywhere.

AGAIN I MUST STRESS CHECK THE INFORMATION.

Peace

Thanks for the tip. I washed the gear in warm water with light detergent and dried it all out and it looks okay. But I’m definitely going to email the manufacturers and ask what they think, too.It might be good that the mold was white, too:

“The body of the mold (i.e., the network of filaments) is generally white or colorless. So, a mold may appear white before it produces spores and later appear black or blue after producing the colored spores.”

So maybe I got to it early.

Same thing happened to me a few years back.  Was out in a rain storm when climbing and didnt dry my gear out properly.  Went back to get it and was all moldy just like you described.  I wasnt about to take any chances with weight bearing gear (slings, draws, etc….), so I tossed it all.  Is it really worth saving a few bucks?

Keep the crash pad for sure.  If the mold is stubborn, then you can get fungicide to help get rid of it.

Just my thoughts.
