Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has any links to literature or personal experience with climbing during pregnancy.  I am 5 months, and doing the full body harness, climbing routes within my means thing.  It would be nice to get some information about it though.

Thanks in advance,
Julia

Hi Julia,

I work at a climbing gym, and i’ve seen many women stop climbing and many keep climbing safely also. I think it depends on how you feel about the whole idea.

My wife climbed until about 7 months safely a couple of grades under her ability. When her hips started “loosening” she stopped. She was just using a regular harness.

I found that when you sit in a harness, the waist belt gets pulled away from your belly so their was no pressure on the belly.

Hope that helps a bit.

Make sure to keep track of your heart rate as well…
Our doctor thought that the first 13 weeks would be most critical in keeping mom and baby safe. My wife bouldered outside up to 7 months and top-roped to 8 with no ill effect.
