Post Farewell to Rock Oasis - a climbing gym story
on: June 23, 2011, 15:39

As many Toronto area climbers know, the Rock Oasis climbing gym in Toronto is moving. A condo developer bought out the site of the gym, and is going to demolish the 120 year old industrial structure that’s been the gym’s home for the past 13 years.

To mark this kinda sad occasion, I’ve written a (rather lengthy) sentimental essay on the heritage of the building, as well as parts of the surrounding neighbourhood at Front and Bathurst. I also interview Rock Oasis’ founder about the history of Oasis, as well as discuss the economic forces and planning framework that have led to the building’s impending destruction.

The essay can be found here:

Feel free to pass this along to anyone you think might enjoy reading about the history of the gym!
