Post Question for female climbers
on: May 24, 2012, 06:18

I’m doing a paper on how the sports climbing community has adapted to women’s needs. My ideas are clothing/equipment, events/workshops, books specifically for women/websites, etc,…

I would also like to know why women start climbing in the first place, what are their initial goals and problems they face when they’re starting.

If anyone has any ideas or information about how the community has adapted to women, it would be very helpful. Thank you!

not sure if i see any adaptions (maybe outside of clothing/harnesses/shoes), and I wouldn’t want there to be. a sport is a sport, if we want to play, we should play at the same level as the boys in my mind.

why do we climb? for the same reasons men do - why would that be different?

there might be a difference generally between men/woman beginners. i’ve seen (&experienced) men doing much better than woman to start - relying on their generally much more developed upper body strength. but there comes time when men need to step back and ‘climb like a girl’ aka: use their feet & gain some technique. woman, lacking upper body strength to rely on initial seem to learn technique sooner as a requirement.

this is all generalization, of course. and i wouldn’t say it applies to kids/youths - just for beginner adults.

maybe someone else has ideas?

climbing the squamish granite!
