Some of his most impressive ascents include the first ascent of Lost in America VI 5.9 A5 on El Cap with Randy Leavitt, the 1986 first ascent of the Northwest Ridge of Gasherbrum IV with Tim Macartney-Snape and Tom Hargis, a 1990 K2 ascent with Steve Swenson and others, and his 1994 first ascent of Wall of Shadows, Alaska Grade-6 AI6+ 5.9 A4 on Mount Hunter with Michael Kennedy.
He has authored a number books, including Thin Air: Encounters in the Himalayas, Mixed Emotions: Mountaineering Writings of Greg Child and Climbing Free with Lynn Hill. In this Basecamp Podcast, Gripped editor Brandon Pullan’s conversation with Child ranges from Child’s controversial photograph of a dead climber to what not to do when sharing a tent on the side of a mountain.
