Honnold Solos Mexican Big Wall

Alex Honnold starts 2014 with a 500-metre solo.

Honnold soloed El Sendero Luminoso in El Potrero Chico, Mexico, in only three hours. Honnold and Cedar Wright climbed the route four times, cleaning it and rehearsing the moves. They added 300 metres of climbing to the true summit of the peak.

Honnold is known for his big wall solos. “Alex will downplay the achievement, but I can assure you this is one of the most cutting edge big-wall solos of all time,” Wright says. The solo went to plan, “It felt pretty straight forward,” Honnold said, “Once I started up, I was like this is awesome. I didn’t blow a single foot, like a ballerina.”
