Manaslu Summit and Another Everest Attempt

Climbers have topped out the first 8,000-metre peak to be climbed this fall.

Over a dozen climbers made it to the top of Manaslu 8,156 metres this week. Over the past month, bad climbing conditions and poor weather have kept climbers pinned down.

On Makalu 8,481 metres, a number of teams abandoned their attempt, including a ski team that reached the season high-point on the mountain. “Push is over and no summit reached. We did ski from a new high point. And everyone safe after some very real avys above 8k.” Skier Adrian Ballinger wrote this week on his social media.

On Mount Everest, Japanese climber Nobukazu Kuriki is gearing up for another summit push. Kuriki is the only climber attempting the world’s highest mountain this year.

Japanese mountaineer Nobukazu Kuriki, 33, from Hokkaido, is preparing to make his fifth attempt.
Japanese mountaineer Nobukazu Kuriki, 33, from Hokkaido, is preparing to make his fifth attempt.

It seems fitting that in the wake of Nepal announcing they will make it harder for inexperienced climbers to get permits for Everest, Kuriki is attempting one of the boldest ascents of the decade: solo and without supplemental. Not to mention, he lost all of his fingers and a thumb during an Everest attempt in 2012.

Last week, Kuriki reached the final camp before the summit, but turned around due to dangerous conditions. He said if he continued he would have died.

According to a report in the Telegraph, Tikaram Gurung who is the director of the company in charge of Kuriki’s expedition, said, “He is staying at Base Camp for a few days but will try again for the summit starting Oct. 1.”

“He is in good physical condition and experienced no major problems on the climb.”
