MEC Canadian Bouldering National Championship takes place this weekend

Don't miss this weekend's action at the Canadian Bouldering National Championship!

If you are in or even near Edmonton this weekend, be sure to head over to Rock Jungle Fitness, as they are hosting the 2013 Canadian Bouldering National Championships. The event will take place over two days (qualifiers on Saturday and finals on Sunday), and will showcase some of Canada‘s best competition climbers as they wrestle with the devious creations of the route setters.

Despite last year’s champions, Sean McColl and Elise Sethna, missing in action, this year’s field is one of the deepest and certainly one of the most talented. On the men’s side the list of contenders includes Matt Johnson, Terry Paholek, Josh Muller and Jason Holowach. These climbers have all battled one another in previous comps and had good showings this past season at Tour de Bloc Western locals. From the east, Fred Charron, Sebastien Lazure, Ayo Sopeju and former Canadian National Champion John Bowles will all look to cap off their consistently good showings at TdB locals and regionals with a good result at the Nationals.

On the women’s side, Thirza Carpenter and Stacey Weldon top the list of favourites. Carpenter, in particular, who has always been a clutch performer at the Nationals, will have extra incentive with home-field advantage. Looking to spoil the party is a strong contingent from the eastern bloc, notably Kerry Briggs, Chloe Legault and Bonnie De Bruijn. Briggs in particular is a real dark horse, and could surprise many.

Tour de Bloc will also be posting updates on their Facebook page throughout the weekend, and check back with us next week for event wrap up. Watch this pre-comp video by Calgary Climbing Centre’s Walson Tai on the CCC team’s preparation for Nationals to help get you excited for all the action.
