Steve McClure Sends Britain’s First 5.15b

Steve McClure sent his multi-year project in Malham Cove in Britain and is grading it 5.15b, making it the first at the grade in the country.

According to UkClimbing who broke the news, “The line starts up Raindogs 8a, negotiates the crux of Rainshadow 9a, then leads up Batman 9a/+ before finishing up Bat Route 8c.” McClure had not named the route as of May 5.

In 2007, McClure sent Overshadow 5.15a in Britain, which Adam Ondra confirmed was difficult for the grade.

Ian Dunn was on hand and took a few photos of McClure’s new 5.15b, including the one below. Find McClure just down and right of centre.

With two decades of hard climbing, including the first ascent of Mutation in the 1990s at 5.14d which is unrepeated, McClure continues to show that he is one of the world’s leading climbers.
