The Himalayan climbing season has only just begun and already four climbers have died. Patrik Mattioli from Switzerland and Jon David Johnson from Austria died after falling into a crevasse on Shishapangma. “The incident occurred at an altitude of 6,200 m on April 24 while they were moving up from advanced basecamp,” an official at Active Holiday Treks said. The team leader Julian Benedikt Beermann was rescued by support staff. “Bodies of the deceased have not been recovered yet.”

On Mount Everest Japanese climber Hidenori Hagi died on Friday night at basecamp. Lazimpat-based Cosmo Trek Pvt Ltd reported, “Hagi (67) breathed his last while undergoing treatment at a basecamp clinic.” His body was airlifted to Kathmandu and no cause of his death was given. A Korean climber died from altitude sickness on Tuesday during a descent from Lobuche peak in Khumbu region.

One of those evacuated was former Navy Seal Team 6 member Don Mann. He was flown off the mountain to receive emergency care and is now back in America. Mann has been climbing for many years, has run multiple marathons in a day and dual Ironman competitions.

In the past three weeks, 110 patients have received treatment by the Himalayan Rescue Association. Lakpa Sherpa said, “Most of the evacuated patients were suffering from high altitude pulmonary edema and high altitude cerebral edema.” There are over 700 climbers on 92 teams climbing on different mountains in the Himalayas this spring.
