December in Scotland: late winter and new routes

Winter climbing started in Scotland at the beginning of December, after an unseasonably warm November.

The season started off with a new three-pitch grade four by Roger Everett and Simon Richardson on the north side of Braeriach. There were also ascents in the Northern Corries and an accent on Sgur Thearlaich.

Will Sim and Andy Inglis climbed Sidewinder VII, 7 on Ben Nevis. The next day, they made the second ascent of Tomahawk Crack VIII, 9. The hard route was first climbed by Greg Boswell and Adam Russell in November 2012.

Kev Shields and Steve Holmes made an ascent of the sketchy ground right of the North Gully on Ben Nevis, a variation to The Gift. Ally Swinton and his Dad, Gav Swinton, climbed a new route Punching Numbers VI, 7 on Creagan Cha-no.

Roger Webb and Simon Richardson climbed a new route on the summit cliff of Beinn a’Mhuinidh in the Northern Highlands.

Guy Robertson and Greg Boswell made the second ascent of Culloden IX, 9 on Creag an Dubh Loch’s Broad Terrace Wall. The summer route was first climbed in winter in 2010 by Iain Small, Gordon Lennox and Tony Stone.

Scotland 2013/14 New Routes

Iain Young and John Higham made the first ascent of Boustie Buttress III, 4 in Corrie of Clova in the Angus Glens.

Andy Nisbet and Steve Perry added a new route Flying Saucer VI, 5 to Stob Ban in the Mamores.

Scotland Ice Trip

Dave Almond and Graham Dawson made an ascent of The Secret VIII,9 on Ben Nevis. “It’s been a long wait for the season to start,” Dave said. “So I used the time to its maximum to pack in some extra dry tooling sessions in Wales.”

Simon Richardson was at it again with Henning Wackerhage on their new Silver Threads Among the Gold IV, 5 on Coire Farchal.

Jonathan Preston and Andy Nisbet recently made the first ascent of Gonzo IV, 4 in Coire an Lochain on the East Face of Aonach Mor.
