Finlayson Sends Superman

Squamish climber, Jamie Finlayson, who has a piece on Squamish climbing in our June issue, has sent Superman 5.14c on the Big Show at Cheakamus.

Finlayson sent the route which was first climbed by Sonnie Trotter in 2002, second ascent by Sean McColl in 2004, on May 7.

Finlayson said, “It was great, got it on my eighth try. It is a linkup of the whole Big Show, Captain America 5.14b with Patience 5.14a, I did both last season. This year I feel much stronger and needed a few days to gain some fitness on the wall and remember my beta. I am very happy how it all came together. At the start of Captain America there is a notoriously wet hold in the opening crux, but I was able to dry it with a towel lower down then fire through, beta I learned from Steve Townshend. The route is about 35 m long and I skipped six quickdraws to reduce rope drag. There are a few good rests including one good knee bar and a few big jugs. I spent a long time in the knee bar and seem to have buggered up my hip flexor. Awesome route.”
