Sachi Amma Crushing in Bishop

Sachi Amma’s sending spree seems to be continuing, but instead of repeating 5.15s in Europe, Amma is busy climbing some of Bishop’s hardest problems.

Amma reported that he recently sent a few famous Bishop routes including The Buttermilker V13, The Mandala V12 and The Mandala SDS V14. The Mandala was first climbed in 2000 by Chris Sharma and was later repeated by Dave Graham and then Jared Roth and then Fred Nicole until the consensus was the route should be V11 or V12.

After a number of holds broke, the problem settled at V12. A sit start was climbed in 2002 by Tony Lamiche and graded V13/14. In 2007, Paul Robinson added another V14 variation. Lisa Rands was the first woman to climb it in 2008 and then in 2011, Alex Johnson made the second female ascent.

There has been lots of action in Bishop this winter including a third ascent of Too High Too Flail, a highball 5.13d, by 19-year-old Steve Roth; a repeat of Beautiful Gecko V12 and a new sit start to Seven Spanish Angles.

Amma is no stranger to hard bouldering problems. In 2014, he climbed Hydrangea V15 and Babel V14/15 in a single day at Shiobara, Japan. Having just arrived in California, it will be exiting to see if Amma climbs anymore testpiece problems.
