Watch a Send of Split Beaver, a Smoke Bluff Classic

First climbed in 1975 by Nick Taylor and Peter Peart, Split Beaver has become a must-climb test-piece for 5.10 offwidth fans. You start by pulling over a bulge that leads to a crack that widens and steepens. You switch from hand jams to fist jams and then rattly fist jams that sometimes require palm stacks, depending on the size of your hands. Read a write-up by Mike Hengeveld here about the vicious Smoke Bluffs crack, in which he writes, “My offwidthing started with a climb called Split Beaver. In the local climbing circle, it had a reputation as a hard climb; it was steep, sustained, and–worst of all–it widened all the way up.” Watch this clip of Nic Vissers by Ryan Larkin on the splitter below.
