The long-awaited Director’s order 41, with its outline of bolting policies for parks, including major areas like Yosemite and Joshua Tree, has been lauded by some as an unmitigated victory for climbers access. While some aspects of the order certainly are positive (anchors are accepted as compatible with wilderness, no interim bolt ban is required, and individual parks can make policies that do not require approval of every anchor), some, including the American Alpine Club, have found certain aspects of the order confusing.

Two familiar faces from this scene who will compete at the World Cup are Canmore’s Stacey Weldon, and Saskatoon’s Jason Holowach.

“How is it that you can climb so well,” A Russian climber asked Brit Ian McNaught-Davis, who was smoking on the summit of Peak Communism, “When you are so decadent?” That was back in the 70s but Russian climbers still have a reputation for intensity that shows in all disciplines of climbing.

Earlier this week, on Tuesday May 13, the National Park Service released Director’s Order #41, a document on many activities in U.S. National Parks, including, in item 7.2, climbing in American National Parks.
