Justin Barbour Calls Off Remote Quebec Expedition

Newfoundland teacher Justin Barbour’s long paddling expedition with his dog Saku through northern Quebec and Labrador has ended after 80 days.

In 2017, the 30-year-old completed a 68-day crossing of the island of Newfoundland.

On this year’s trip, he managed to paddle nearly 1,000 kilometres, but cold winter weather stopped his progress in the Caniapiscau Reservoir for over a week.

He encountered 30 centimetres of snow and strong winds that forced him to build a strong shelter. The cold norther winter is freezing lakes that Barbour needs to cross to complete his 1,800-kilometre journey.

Barbour likely would’ve finished his paddle that retraced the Leonidas Hubbard 1903 expedition, but started later than expected.

The next leg of the trip would have taken him down the Great Whale River to Hudson Bay. A great effort!
