Justin Barbour on Canada Canoe Expedition

Justin Barbour is currently on a 1,700-kilometre canoe expedition in norther Quebec and Labrador with his dog Saku.

Barbour’s trip started once month ago today in North West River and will end sometime this fall in Kuuijjuarapik on Hudson Bay. Read more about Barbour’s warm up for the trip here and here.

In 1903, Leonidas Hubbard from New York travelled this same section of river, which was at the time an undocumented territory of Labrador.

Hubbard began his trip in July 1903 accompanied by Dillon Wallace and George Elson. They faced many hardships on the expedition and ran out of supplies. Leonidas Hubbard didn’t survive the trip, but his wife, Mina Hubbard, came to Labrador in 1905 and completed the journey.

Barbour has paddled nearly 300 kilometres in the past month, including nearly 200 kilometres of upstream paddling.

He’s had to complete a number of difficult portages and has linked dangerous sections of the Naskaupi and Red Wine rivers.

Barbour is currently heading into the remote Caniapiscau Reservoir in Quebec and will eventually reach Great Whale River which will lead to Hudson Bay.
