Alannah Yip Crushes Semis, Finishes 7th

Garnbret and Noguchi head to Finals in first and second

“It was a savage round,” as commentator Charlie Boscoe said. That is, until Janja Garnbret came out. The reigning World Cup Bouldering champion pulled off the only send of problem one with 15 seconds left on the clock, and proceeded to top problems three and four as well. The only other woman to finish the last two problems was the unstoppable veteran Akiyo Noguchi.

Garnbret and Noguchi will be joined in Finals by Nanako Kura and Ievgeniia Kazbekova, thanks to their sends of the tricky slab problem number two. And fan favourites, Miho Nonaka and Shauna Coxsey, made the cut-off too, but only by attempts to zone.

Competitors ranked 5th through 10th all had three zones, including Canada’s Alannah Yip, who looked every bit the world-class climber that she is. Yip and Futabo Ito both had three zones in seven attempts, just one more than Coxsey and two more than Nonaka.

This is Yip’s best finish in Bouldering Worlds and it puts her in a great place, objectively and mentally, moving ahead to the Lead competition.
