Allison Vest Third into Semi’s – The North American Cup Series

The North American Cup Series has begun in Salt Lake City. Allison Vest looks strong into Semi-finals and Alex Puccio returns to competition.

Although competition fanatics will have to wait just under two weeks for another Bouldering World Cup, The North American Cup Series began yesterday in Salt Lake City.

The Series consists of five stops (featured below) across North America and serves to unite American and Canadian climbers in a friendlier bout of competition. Naturally, the stakes still stand high as competitors seek to test themselves against some of the world’s best athletes. Still, the series works more to push advanced and elite athletes in a new type of competition as competitive climbing becomes a more established sport.

The event this weekend kicks off at the USA Climbing National Training Centre in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Qualification event concluded yesterday with numerous high-profile names moving on into the semi-finals.

US national speed record holder Emma Hunt has entered the semi-final round with five tops and five zones. These results match both second and third placed athletes Alex Puccio and Allison Vest.

After a sabbatical from competition, audiences will enjoy watching the American Champion retake the stage. Similarly, Canadian audiences will cheer for Vest, Canada’s defending National Bouldering Champion. Vest tied Puccio in attempts to Top and attempts to Zone.

The Men’s field features a similarly strong set of climbers heading into the semi-final round. First and second positions heading into semi-finals went to Zach Galla and Chris Cosser. Separated by attempts, it will become interesting to see how the generally challenging semi-final round shakes these two athletes. Charles Barron entered the competition in third position with five tops and six zones followed quickly by Kai Lightner in fourth.

As with the World Cups, 20 athletes per gender will enter the Semi-final round. Six athletes will then move through to Finals.

The semi-final round will begin at 12:30 pm EST this afternoon, June 13. Finals will begin at 7:00 pm EST.
