Bassa Mawem Can’t Compete in Olympics Finals

Which means there will only be seven climbers in men's finals tomorrow

Sport Climbing is currently having its debut at the Tokyo Olympics with 40 of the best climbers in the world already having competed in qualifiers. The men’s and women’s finals lineup has been determined, with the men’s finals taking place tomorrow and women’s on Aug. 6.

During the lead portion of qualifications, Bassa Mawem seriously injured his left bicep. Despite him not scoring well on the lead route, he advanced to the final-eight thanks to his standout boulder and speed climbs.

With his brother, Mickeal, by his side and his left arm slung close to his chest, Bassa released a video informing the public that he will not be competing in finals. This means that there will only be seven climbers in men’s finals: Mickael Mawem, Tomoa Narasaki, Colin Duffy, Jakob Schubert, Adam Ondra, Alberto Gines Lopez and Nathaniel Coleman. Based on the speed qualifiers, Ondra was meant to race Bassa, which won’t happen, so Ondra will might get a bye to semis which guarantees him at least fourth place in speed – that’s if Alex Megos isn’t allowed to compete which is currently unknown.
