Déjà Vu as Ontario Closes Climbing Gyms Again

Climbers will have to dust off the home boards and hangboards as mid-winter routines are interrupted by the pandemic

In response to the rise in Covid cases the province is experiencing, Ontario has opted to close gyms, sports facilities and stop indoor dining. The closure will last at least three weeks. With a record number of cases/day this week, Doug Ford’s government made the announcement on Jan. 3.

The popular gym Up the Bloc wrote on Instagram, “Enjoy the next two days before round 3 starts.” To which climbers replied: “I am SOOOOOOOO done with this garbage. Heartbroken for gyms, restaurants and small businesses,” and, “Seriously f*ck this. Show me the outbreaks in climbing gyms????”

Over the past two weeks, other provinces have reduced capacity limits in gyms, with B.C. shutting down most fitness facilities – however climbing gyms have remained open.

Be sure to support your local climbing gym over the next two days before the shutdown, and over the next month however possible. Just like all of you climbers out there, we wish our gyms could stay open.
