Georgia Climbing Gym Treadstone Reopens During Covid

Would you go to a climbing gym during a deadly pandemic?

Treadstone climbing gym in Columbus, Georgia, reopened on April 24 with new hygiene and operations protocols during the covid-19 pandemic. Canadians are currently awaiting the reopening of climbing facilities, but might have to be patient for a little bit longer.

Last week, the governor of Georgia, Brian Kemp, announced that some facilities in that state, such as barbershops, hair salons, massage therapy businesses and gyms could reopen. The move goes against recommendations by healthcare officials. Other Georgia climbing gyms are set to reopen, but some will remain closed.

The owner of B.C.’s Cliffhanger climbing gym, Colin Whyte, told the Vancouver Sun here: “It’s been very difficult. We’ve seen ebbs and flows in the economy, and we got through 2008 and so on. But no one was prepared for this.” Whyte pays $1,000/day for rent and insurance and had to layoff 29 of his 30 staff. “It’s going to be very, very tight as far as numbers go. All I can do is try.”
