It was a thrilling final round of climbing for the men’s combined event at the Paris Olympics today, with Toby Roberts of Great Britain going home with the gold medal. In second was Japanese climber Sorato Anratu and in third was Austrian Jakob Schubert.

Roberts, 19, and Anraku, 17, have spent their competitive years climbing against each other. Anraku was ahead with 69.3 points after bouldering and would climb after Roberts in lead. Roberts finished lead with 92.1 points for a total of 155.2 for the finals. If Anraku climbed reached the 88-point hold, then he would win gold. However, Anraku fell with 76.1 points, finishing finals with 145.4 points, leaving Roberts with the gold medal victory.

“I’m just riding on adrenaline right now, but I feel incredible,” said Roberts. “At that point I already knew I had won the silver medal, so I was really happy anyway just watching him. Then to realise that I had just become Olympic champion, I was just: wow, no words.”

And Anraku said, “At the third and fourth boulder, I could not reach the top. And in the lead my feet weren’t stable enough, which started in the middle of the route. But I’m still proud of myself.”

And Schubert, who won his second Olympic bronze, said, “I feel good. I still haven’t had much time to process the whole thing. I am extremely proud that climbing is at the Olympic Games for the second time and that I have my second medal. That’s something very special. And at the same time, I have the feeling that the Boulder round frustrated me extremely and there was a lot more possible for me today. The big goal was gold or silver, and I’m a little bit hesitant about that, but I just can’t complain because I know how difficult it is to win an Olympic medal.”

Adam Ondra, who won the lead round, had a disapointing boulder round and finished in sixth. Colin Duffy, who was looking strong in the boulder round, finished just off the podium in fourth, he was followed by Hamish McArthur. Tokyo 2020 gold medallist Alberto Gines Lopez finished in seventh, followed by hometown favourtie Paul Jenft.
