Jakob Schubert and Jessica Pils Only Austrians Going to Olympics

Team Austria will not be sending competitors to the Moscow Championships in one month

The Moscow Championships are taking place from Nov. 20 to 29, it will be the final event that decides what European climbers are heading to the Tokyo Olympics. There’s currently a travel warning set by the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs against visiting Russia due to covid.

Team Austria has announced that they will not be sending any climbers to the comp. That means that the only Austrians heading to the Olympics are Jakob Schubert and Jessica Pils.

“This decision was not an easy one for us, but the health of everyone involved clearly comes first. We consulted with the coaches and also obtained the opinions of the athletes. From our point of view, a posting to Moscow due to travel warnings and restrictions is not responsible. ”

As of now, the Moscow Championships are scheduled to go ahead, but it’s unclear how many climbers will be competing. Sean McColl and Alannah Yip are the two Canadian athletes going to the 2021 Olympics.
