Janja Garnbret Releases Statement About World Cup Participation
The comp climbing GOAT will only participate in three events in 2025

The IFSC World Cup series in 2025 is going to be little different this year, particularly for the women’s Boulder and Lead comps. In the aftermath of last summer’s Paris Olympics, Janja Garnbret and Brooke Raboutou, two of the sports biggest stars and toughest competitors, are deciding to sit out much of the 2025 season. Natalia Grossman is also sidelined recovering from serious knee surgery, preventing her participation for at least for the first portion of the year.
Two-time Olympic gold medalist Garnbret just released a statement through her Instagram explaining this absence. “After years full of amazing competitions and especially the Olympic year itself which was physically and mentally demanding, I’ve decided to do it a bit differently this year,” she said. “Of course I’m still training hard and upgrading my last years shape but I also felt that I needed a bit more time away from competing.
“It gives me the opportunity to have some more time processing everything that has happened, to freshen up my mind and prioritize more time spending on rock which I have put on hold for so many years. However, I cannot and don’t want to miss out on competing entirely. So you will see me competing at the Innsbruck World Cup, home World Cup in Koper and World Championships in Korea. I’m looking forward to what this year has in store for me and I want to thank you all for endless love and support.”
We’ll first see Garnbret compete in late June at the Innsbruck Boulder and Lead World Cup. Next we’ll see her in early September at the Lead World Cup in Koper, Slovenia. And most excitingly, her final performance of the year with be in Seoul, Korea at the end of the September at the World Championships. Other than the Olympics, the World Championships is the most prestigious comp climbing event, taking place once every two years.
