Janja Garnbret Won Gold and Was Slovenia’s Flag Bearer

She became the first woman in history to win an Olympic Sport Climbing gold

The Summer Olympics came to an end on Aug. 8 at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, Japan, where the closing ceremony formally marked the passing of the baton from the current to the next Summer Olympic host city: Paris, France.

Sport Climbing star and Olympic gold medallist Janja Garnbret of Slovenia was one of 206 flag bearers that paraded in the stadium, representing the 205 National Olympic Committees and the IOC Refugee Olympic Team. By carrying the Slovenian flag, she became the first flag bearer representing Sport Climbing at an Olympic Ceremony.

Garnbret won the women’s Combined Olympic gold medal, becoming the first female Olympic Champion in the history of Sport Climbing. For men, Alberto Ginés López took gold against some of the world’s top climbers, read about his win here.
